Colliding Spaghetti Western and Surf Rock With The Kinky Fingers

The Kinky Fingers might not reside anywhere near the coast, but their beachy album, Worst Of, leads us to believe otherwise. The Denver locals infuse numerous genres into their Tarantino inspired sound. Tayler Doyle, The Kinky Finger’s frontman, has a unique voice that lends to the group’s authenticity. The band’s ability to draw from multiple musical influences, including Cumbia and outlaw Country, while staying true to their roots keeps Worst Of inspiringly raw.

Check out my conservation with The Kinky Fingers below, coupled with a spacey video of their blues driven track “Midnight Watchman” at the bottom of the page. Cheers.

Space + Echo : So tell us a little bit about your sound, what inspired The Kinky Fingers to become a super surfy, psychedelic, rock band?

The Kinky Fingers: Through skating and snowboarding probably and all those old videos we watched as kids. We were always into rock n roll, but it’s really the Quentin Tarantino sound we’re after. If we can make a song, and we think it could fit to a Tarantino film, then we’ll go forward with it. If not…pshhh. Pulp Fiction was the first time I heard Dick Dale’s “Miserlou” and that lit a fire under my ass.

Space + Echo : When and how did you guys meet?

The Kinky Fingers: We all met about four or five years ago either through skating or through mutual friends in Denver’s music scene.

Space + Echo : How does living in Denver push you guys as a band? Hold you back?

The Kinky Fingers: Denver is still a small town. It’s not the cow town it used to be, for better or worse, but it’s not LA or NY either. I don’t think we’d fit in LA, too big, too hollywood. In Denver we’re a part of a community, everyone knows each other here and everyone helps each other out. A lot of people here play with other groups to keep busy. I think Denver’s biggest draw back is that its an island, secluded from all the other major music cities by thousands of miles so it can be a real chore to get out and tour. But, it’s really not bad. I think Denver has a lot on the horizon.

Space + Echo: What drives you guys outside of music?

The Kinky Fingers: We all skate, we all snowboard, riding motos, working on cars, gardening, pizza parties, math, and science.

Space + Echo: Since you released your debut LP, ‘Vagabond’, and your most recent release, ‘Worst Of’, what has changed in your sound?

The Kinky Fingers: We spent more time in the studio for Vagabond and we we’re rushed. I think we missed the mark on that one. ‘Worst Of’ is actually a reissue of the last three EP’s and a few newbies all on one release. It’s raw. We recorded it in the kitchen and patio room of my house in Sunnyside at the time. The sound quality might not be as great but the emotion and feeling is there, and if that isn’t there then whats the point.

Space + Echo: What is your songwriting process like?

The Kinky Fingers: Usually someone will come to practice with a riff, or maybe a chord progression and some words and we’ll jam on that for a bit, see if we can improv and build on those elements naturally. Forcing something has never worked for us.

Space + Echo: I hear you have a tour coming up in the future, where are y’all headed?

The Kinky Fingers: YES! We’re heading back to the west coast, starting in San Diego and then up to Seattle, with stops in Long Beach, LA, San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, oh and SLC. Hopefully we’ll get a few days to surf and punch a few sharks before BBQin on those golden shores.

Space + Echo: Anywhere you are super stoked about stopping at?

The Kinky Fingers: San Francisco. We’ve made some good friends there over the years and this go round is looking to be the best yet if all goes according to plan but I don’t want to jinx anything just yet.

Space + Echo: What bands have you played with that have really energized you?

The Kinky Fingers: A few years back we opened for The Growlers and that fueled us for a bit but that show was a shit show. Recently we played with Cool Ghouls (SF) and those dudes are great. Also Flaural here in Denver are some inspiring guys.

Space + Echo: After tour, what’s next for The Kinky Fingers?

The Kinky Fingers: We’re sitting on a handful of songs right now, so we’ll be thinking about releasing those and working on new material. There are a few festivals we may link up with, but mostly writing and recording. 😉
